The Custom Jewellery Design Process

Have you ever thought about having your own unique custom piece of jewellery made? Are you thinking about getting engaged and want something different that’s not like all the other engagement rings that you see in jewellery stores? Do you have some old jewellery that you never wear anymore with stones that could be removed and used in a new piece that you’ll wear more often and one you can call your own?

At KIG Fine Jewellery & Custom Design, our specialty is creating one-of-a-kind pieces of jewellery for our valued clients. This is a collaborative process and clients are personally involved at each important step so that we can incorporate the characteristics you love into your jewellery to make it uniquely yours.   We are here to listen, provide our expert advice and create the perfect piece of jewellery with you.

Whether creating engagement rings, wedding bands, earrings, pendants or bracelets, here are the steps involved in the process:

Step 1 – Consultation

Book your consultation with me and together we’ll discuss design, materials, the type(s) of stone(s) required and how we can work best within your budget to achieve the particular kind of design statement that you seek. Feel free to look at the sample pieces we’ve created or bring in inspirational pictures to discuss with me.

Step 2 – Stone Selection

Before finalizing the design, I’ll provide you with several options for diamonds or coloured gemstones depending on what’s required for the piece. (or you can bring in your own stones) I’ll be able to educate you on the merits of each option and help you pick out what will work best for your custom piece and within your budget. As you examine the precious stones, we can discuss your inspirations and any changes you may seek in the design. If you choose a stone at this stage, we will require a deposit from you.

Step 3 – Design Review

Once we have all the necessary details, I’ll put together a design of your custom piece. Depending on the piece, it will be either a sketch or a CAD (and 3D rendering) so you can visualize the creation. Upon your approval of the design, a wax model will be ready for your viewing about one or two weeks later. The shape of this model will be an exact replica of your finished piece of jewellery. This step gives you a much better appreciation of the overall size and design of the finished piece – its actual size, the way it looks from every angle, the proportions of its details. This gives you the final opportunity to change or adjust your design.

Step 4 – Production

Upon your approval of the wax model, our master jeweller will carefully cast the piece into the desired metal. Once the cast is complete, we will set the stones in place, polish and finish the piece. At this point, any special finishes or engraving can be added to the piece.

Step 5 – Delivery

We will contact you as soon as your unique, one-of-a-kind custom piece is ready! You can be rest assured that your custom piece will be presented with a beautiful box and can be gift-wrapped if necessary.

You don’t have to live in Vancouver, BC to be able to take advantage of our custom design services. The beauty of technology allows us to produce custom pieces for clients all over the world! The initial consultation can be done via email, Skype or whatever works best for you…it doesn’t have to be done in person. Many of the custom pieces we’ve done have been for clients who live all over North America and across the globe. With the internet, there are no boundaries!

Let’s get the process started and work together to produce that one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery that will last a lifetime.
